CLEARVIEW BIODIESEL*
Economically viable, real-time quality control of biofuels
Clearview will adapt the solution to your needs
Based on its patented optical technology, Clearview has developed a sensing module which can be integrated in facilities or equipment that dispense, process, handle, or store biofuels. In contrast to its other products, Clearview is not selling biofuel sensors under its own brand name but will customize its modules to a specific use case. Depending on the market size, Clearview will engage our customers as an OEM supplier or through a license model. We are considering exclusive supply chain agreements according to use case, vertical, or geography/jurisdiction.
Current adaptation
Presently, the size on the order of 4″, and form factor, are most compatible with dispensing pumps, but versions down to about 3″ that can be integrated into a fuel cap are readily feasible as well. Whereas flow monitoring is the most common application, batch measurements of one to several ounces (tens of mL) of fuel can also be implemented.
Current use case: Biodiesel Blending Ratio.
Biodiesel blending ratio: real-time measurement with a single sensor
The first application of Clearview’s sensing module is a real-time measurement of the biodiesel blending ratio in dispensing pumps, tanks, or processing facilities. Costly and time-consuming lab measurements are made redundant for accuracy specifications down to less than 1%. The realistically achievable accuracy will depend on the form factor and the degree of adaptation/miniaturization required by the customer use case.
Site certification capabilty
All sensors are low-power, opto-electronic devices readily within specifications for intrinsically safe systems. We will adapt the sensor to any voltage supply available, whereas the design of a customized, appropriately certified, supply is within our capabilities. Monitoring options include wireless RF options such as LoRa, proprietary wireless protocols, or commonly used wired communications.
Customer Value Proposition
- Logistics/fleet management: Access renewable energy credits and optimize efficiency based on cost fluctuations of petroleum diesel versus biodiesel and verify compliance of truck owners and subcontractors.
- Government regulators and NGO’s: Immediate, on-the-ground verification of compliance with renewable energy regulations and sustainability pledges.
- Diesel power industry: Empower your customers to control and verify quality and blending ratios of biodiesel.
- Biodiesel industry: Enable inexpensive, real-time quality control and monitoring of biodiesel blending ratios from process vessels in the refinery to the point of sale or distribution.
How it works:
Multispectral processing
Using Clearview’s patented and proprietary fluorescence spectroscopy technology, the sensor extracts spectral attributes corresponding to different optical wavelengths (colors) of UV (ultraviolet) and visible light (comment: any UV light is fully sealed within an encapsulated sensor, and the sensor is safe to operate around personnel). The following graph shows an example for such attributes versus wavelength. The sensor uses the known dependence of the spectral attributes on the biodiesel blending ratio in order to convert the light spectrum received in the measurement unit to a calibrated biodiesel blending ratio.
Advantages of the sensor technology:
- Instant, reliable field measurement of blending ratio outside lab
- Chemical-free measurement
- Specifications compatible with intrinsic safety
- Adaptable to use cases from large-scale processes to embedded systems
- Redundant data provides calibration opportunities for a range of biofuel types
